Struggles for Justice
A teaching resource for Citizenship at Key Stages 3 and 4.
Struggles For Justice is a free, downloadable teaching resource that allows pupils to think about and debate contemporary issues that are part of the Citizenship Curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4 by examining historical events that have thrown up similar issues.
The resource aims to show young people that it is possible to make their voices heard and effect change in society and that this is best achieved when groups and communities pull together, get organised and unite. It does this by using examples from the history of struggles for justice in Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities, stretching back fifty years, and showing how they relate to issues facing BME communities today.
The resource contains five modules: Community and Identity, Community Safety, Media and Racism, Racial Discrimination and Youth and Protest. Each module is based on between one and three primary documents from the Institute of Race Relations’ Black History Collection and contains exercises that can be used on an interactive white board. An accompanying, separate section contains teachers’ notes, curriculum links, a glossary, and a list of further sources of information.
Because this project is part of our ongoing work, we would welcome responses and feedback to it, and will be happy to give teachers who wish to use it what further help we can. We thank the Heritage Lottery Fund, whose financial assistance made the creation of this teaching resource possible.
To use these modules, your PC needs to be able to open Acrobat and Flash files. Most PCs can do this anyway but, if necessary, download the Acrobat Reader and Flash Player applications from the Adobe website. To use the last two modules, you will also require a media player capable of playing MPEG-4 files, such as Apple’s Quicktime Player application.
