Eight weeks after the London bombings racial violence attacks are still on the rise.
- 31 August 2005: BBC News reports that international students at Nottingham University are scared to go out after Om Prakass Malik suffers serious facial injuries in an attack by two White men shouting racist abuse. (BBC News 31.8.05)
- 30 August 2005: The Liverpool Daily Post reports that there has been a four-fold increase in religiously and racially motivated crimes in the Merseyside area. The Merseyside Racial Monitoring Unit received 200 calls in the six weeks after the London bombings, compared to 48 in the six week prior to the bombings. Police figures show a 87 per cent increase in incidents reported, compared to the same time last year. (Liverpool Daily Post 30.8.05)
- 28 August 2005: This is Local London reports that the Patel family in Borehamwood has suffered a two-year racist campaign, which has worsened since the London bombings, that has left them frightened to leave their home. In the last week, 60-year-old Suresh Patel has been racially abused and attacked walking to the shops by a gang of eight youths; he is deaf in one ear after an attack last year. - 27 August 2005: 30 National Front supporters march in Chatham, Kent. They are met by a 100-strong counter demonstration. (Medway Messenger 29.8.05)
- 27 August 2005:Click Press reports that a 17-year-old Muslim girl, who was thrown in front of a car in a racist attack three weeks ago, is taking part in an international human rights festival despite recovering from surgery to repair her jaw. (Click Press 27.8.05)
- 26 August 2005: The Asian News reports that a Muslim family from Hyde, Manchester, are accused of being bombers by a White family as they enter Alton Towers fun park. They inform security guards at the park who separate the two families; the guards then insist on searching the Muslim family’s car for ‘bombs’. (The Asian News 26.8.05)
- 25 August 2005: A block of flats in Watton, Norfolk, housing Portuguese migrant workers, is evacuated after an incendiary device containing fireworks is left on a landing. No one is injured as the fire is extinguished quickly. Police are investigating a possible racial motive. On 29 August, three men, Daniel Taylor, 21, Sinclair Maynard, 25, and Paul Lusher, 22, appear in court charged with arson with intent to endanger life. - 21 August 2005: Deputy Imam Arshed Mahmood, 51, suffers cuts and bruises after a man standing with others outside a pub in Maidstone racially abuses him and hits him with a bottle and then punches him up to six times. The man also takes Arshed Mahmood’s crutches and throws them away. A couple that came to his aid are also abused. A 27-year-old man is later charged with GBH with intent. - 21 August 2005: A man posts a racist letter through the letterbox of a home of a Black family in Carlisle. Derek Potts, 30, is later charged with distributing writing with the threat of unlawful violence and causing harassment and alarm which is racially aggravated. (The Cumberland News 26.8.05)
- 19 August 2005: A 20-year-old Sikh man is racially abused by two White men, who follow him down Princes Street, Edinburgh. The men repeatedly push him from behind and then punch him to the ground and rip off his turban and jacket. The attack is only stopped when two passers-by intervene. The victim is not seriously injured. (Edinburgh Evening News 27.8.05 and BBC News 27.8.05)
- 15 August 2005: A Bangladeshi schoolboy suffers serious head and chest injuries after being beaten in a racist attack by a gang of youths in Sunderland. In other incidents on the same day, Asians are chased down a Sunderland street by children wielding bats and sticks and the windows of a house are also smashed – injuring a 2-year-old Bangladeshi girl. Three youths aged 15, 16 and 17 are later charged with assault and racially aggravated disorderly conduct. The 17-year-old is also charged with racially aggravated assault. - 12 August 2005: A 22-year-old Sikh man driving with his wife and two-year-old daughter in Bristol is showered with glass after a racist shouting abuse smashes a window of the car. (Bristol Evening Post 19.8.05)
- 11 August 2005: A 19-year-old Muslim man is kicked and punched by a gang of four White men who first ask him if he is Muslim. The man is also racially abused by the gang who attack as he walks down a Maidstone street; he suffers leg injuries. (Kent Messenger 26.8.05)
- 11 August 2005: Bristol Evening Post reports that Sachin Singhal has been targeted by racists following the London bombings; he has had acid poured over his car damaging the paintwork and has also been racially abused in the street. (Bristol Evening Post 11.8.05)
- 31 July 2005: Vandals cover ten homes on a housing estate in east Hull with racist graffiti which reads ‘no asylum’, ‘white power’ and ‘no Muslims’. (Hull Daily Mail 2.8.05)
- 29 July 2005: A man leaves a hoax bomb outside an Asian restaurant in Rochdale. The army carry out a controlled explosion on the device; a man later calls the police and threatens to bomb Bradford next. On 30 August, Graeme Maynard is sentenced to two and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to placing a hoax bomb with intent. The court is told Maynard intended to ‘strike fear into the hearts of the Asian community’. (BBC News 30.8.05)
- 10 July 2005: A twelfth floor flat in a high-rise block in Hull has flammable liquid poured through its letterbox and is set alight. The blaze damages eight flats and three people are treated for smoke inhalation. Police are investigating a racial motive to the attacks. (Hull Daily Mail 11.7.05)
