As Black History Month approaches, IRR News provides a round-up of forthcoming events.
- From Friday 1 October 2010 – Black Britannia: A free photography exhibition by John Ferguson of inspiring black men and women. At Open the Gate, 33-35 Stoke Newington Road, London N16 8BJ.
- From Friday 1 October 2010 – Ancestral words: Outstanding the test of time: An exhibition on the significance of proverbs and quotations from Black History icons, as understood by young people in Birmingham. At The Drum, 144 Potters Lane, Aston, Birmingham, B6 4UU.
- Friday 1 October 2010 – Ruby Bridges, 6pm: A free screening of a film based on the true story of Ruby Bridges, the first black child to attend an all white elementary school in 1960’s New Orleans. At Flash Musicals, Methuen Road, Edware, Middlesex HA8 6EZ.
- From Saturday 2 October 2010 – Uprooting the gaze, 12pm: A photography exhibition featuring work by five award-winning African artists. At Fringe Focus, The Old Co-Op Building, 94-101 London Road, Brighton BN1 4JF.
- Saturday 2 October 2010 – Araba’s Song, A Slave Story, 7.45pm: A story of survival in a play charting the lives of six generations of women, by Yaw Asiyama. At Fairfield Halls, Park Lane, Croydon, Surrey CR9 1DG.
- Tuesday 5 October 2010 – Black film club talk: From servitude to superhero, 12pm: Chase Lynton-Lynch discusses icons of black film and theories of stereotyping. At the International Slavery Museum, Dock Traffic Office, Albert Dock, Liverpool L3 4AX.
- Wednesday 6 October 2010 – Claudia Jones Memorial Lecture, 7.30pm: The lecture will be given by Professor Gargi Bhattacharyya. Organised by the NUJ Black Members Council, booking essential. At The London Canal Museum, 12-13 New Warf Road, London N1 9RT.
- Saturday 10 October 2010 – Tracing your Caribbean roots, 1pm: A workshop for people wishing to trace their West Indian roots. At the Lancashire Record Office, Bow Road, Preston PR1 2RE.
- Tuesday 12 October 2010 – Injustice, 6pm: A free special screening of Ken Fero’s documentary which chronicles the struggle for justice of families of people who have died in police custody. At University of Sussex, Sussex House, Brighton BN1 9RH.
- Saturday 16 October 2010 – Legacy street celebration, 1pm: A free family street party, with music, food and children’s activities. With Brighton Unitarian Church, on New Road, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1UF.
- Saturday 16 October 2010 – Banyan Wari games workshop, 11.30am/1.30pm: A workshop for those who want to play and learn the ancient number and strategy game, Wari. At the International Slavery Museum, Dock Traffic Office, Albert Dock, Liverpool L3 4AX.
- Thursday 21 October 2010 – Writing our legacy, 8pm: A spoken word event with some of the UK’s best black and minority writers, including Woodrow Phoenix and Monika Akila. At Redroaster Coffee House, St. James’s Street, Brighton, East Sussex BN21RE.
- Saturday 23 October 2010 – Brixton Black Panthers and the Olive Morris story, 5.30pm: An illustrated talk with testimonials and rare photos and video footage of the civil rights struggle in the 1970’s. At Topolski Century, 150-152 Hungerford Arches, South Bank, London SE1 8XU.
- Saturday 23 October 2010 – Black History Tour, times vary: A tour of the Topolski Century, examining black history through the paintings and panels of Feliks Topolski. At Topolski Century, 150-152 Hungerford Arches, South Bank, London SE1 8XU.
- Monday 25 October 2010 – Our memories of the uprisings: The 1980’s revisited, 6.30pm: Bringing together a panel to offer a range of memories and discuss the background to the uprisigns in Brixton, Bristol, Toxteth and Mosside. At The British Library, 96 Euston Road, London NW1 2DB.
- Wednesday 27 October 2010 – African history: Did you know?, 6.30pm: Launch of an ‘edu-tainment’ CD of African history, produced by rapper Kimba with Akoben Awards, with musical performances. At Harrow Civic Centre, Station Road, Middlesex HA1 2XF.
- Friday 29 October 2010 – Struggles for Black Community screening, 6pm: A series of films, introduced by the director Colin Prescod, which chart key milestones in the struggle for racial justice. At UNISON, 1 Mabledon Place, London WC1H 9AJ.
