We are disappointed and dismayed at the actions of West Ham United Football Club by buying Lee Bowyer.
Suresh Grover from the NCRM and the Najieb Family Campaign said: “Over the past few years West Ham Football Club have done much to distance themselves from racism. It has also worked with local partnerships and secured funding to involve both the local Asian and Black communities and young people in its community orientated projects. However all its good work will now be undermined by securing Lee Bowyer as one its players.
Lee Bowyer is no longer seen as a role model given his behavior. He has remained unrepentant and shown no remorse for his actions off the field.
West Ham United is part of a diverse London community and needs to ensure that it recruits people who are good mascots both for the game and for good community relations. “
The NCRM has now written to the Secretary for State, local councils, the Mayor of London, local MPs and West Ham United Football club to express our disappointment.
You are going to bash a player because of his life off the field. His actions arn’t bad enough for him to be removed from the Football league, therefore teams should not be prohibited from purchasing his talent.
