An event will be held this weekend in Leicester for families and friends of those who have died in custody.
IRR News spoke to Saqib Deshmukh, one of the organisers, who told us that the event will provide an opportunity for families and friends of those who have died in (police, prison or psychiatric) custody to meet, share experiences and support one another. There will be speakers from family campaigns, live performances, stalls, workshops and displays.
The day will also mark what would have been the forty-fifth birthday of Mikey Powell, who died after being brutally detained by police in Birmingham in 2003. Mikey’s family wish to show their solidarity with other families who have suffered the death of a loved one at the hands of police and prison officers.
The event which has been organised by 4WardEver UK in association with the Mikey Powell Campaign, Habib Ullah Campaign and the Leicester Civil Rights Movement is being held at the Highfields Centre in Leicester.
Other campaigns that are due to attend the event include the families of Paul Coker, Azelle Rodney, Jason McPherson and Sean Rigg.
