The IRR is hosting a public meeting to discuss family campaigns for justice.
On Wednesday 27 November 2013, the IRR and the Mannheim Centre for the Study of Criminology and Criminal Justice (LSE) are hosting a meeting to discuss family campaigns against the state to discover the truth about the deaths of loved ones.
The main speaker is Phil Scraton, author of Hillsborough: The Truth, who was a member of the Hillsborough Independent Panel, and the primary author of its ground-breaking report. He will reflect on the campaign for justice, pursued by many of the families bereaved at Hillsborough, that culminated in the appointment of the Hillsborough Independent Panel. Drawing on families’ experiences over two decades and on the in-depth research into the disclosed documents he will show how the ‘truth’ was exposed, the families and survivors were exonerated and the current, unprecedented investigations initiated.
This will be followed by a discussion including contributions from members of black families whose relatives have died in police custody.
This event marks the launch of the October 2013 edition of Race & Class, featuring Phil Scraton’s retrospective of the Hillsborough families’ fight for justice, ‘The legacy of Hillsborough: liberating truth, challenging power’.
The evening will be chaired by Robert Reiner, Emeritus Professor of Criminology at LSE and Lord Herman Ouseley, member of the Institute of Race Relations’ Council of Management and the chair of Kick it Out.
