Dear IRR News subscriber,
In our final bulletin of 2016, we present the second part of Frances Webber’s investigation into the EU’s response to the refugee crisis. The first article (published earlier this month) examined the militarisation of borders and return to war zones (with a particular focus on Afghanistan and Turkey). In the second part, she examines the closure of Africa’s borders against migration, demanded by the EU as the price for development, trade and aid.
We reproduce a statement by the Rotherham 12 Defence Campaign – set up to defend the twelve Asian men taken to court after protecting Muslim communities in Rotherham from the threat of violence on 5 September 2015 – responding to news that four far-right defendants have now been found guilty for violent disorder in relation to the event.
Our regular calendar of racism and resistance, a fortnightly resource for anti-racist and social justice campaigns, is available here. And finally, a reminder that we are recruiting for an Office Administrator/Assistant to the Director. If you have good organisational and administrative skills, and could help in the day-to-day running of the IRR’s office and with the promotion of research and educational materials, then this could be the job for you. Details are here, and the closing date is 5pm, on 5 January 2017. Please bear in mind that over the Christmas period the IRR may not be able to respond to any email queries right away.
