In the final IRR News bulletin of 2015, we report on a recent event in Hackney, held in memory of the late anti-colonialist activist, broadcaster, playwright, teacher, artist and actor Jan Carew. Launching his autobiography Episodes in My Life, Jan’s wife, Joy, discussed his political organising in Guyana, his role as one of the founders of Black Studies in America, the time this revolutionary writer spent with Malcolm X, his plays and other literature. And his influence was further spoken of by Chris Searle, who helped compile the book of Jan’s poetry Return to Streets of Eternity, also launched at the event.

Our fortnightly calendar of racism and resistance, a resource for anti-racist and social justice campaigns, highlights key events in the UK and Europe. And we have also compiled a calendar of racism and resistance covering the whole of 2015 as a reference tool.

The IRR’s 2015 Annual Report has been published, and can be downloaded here (pdf file, 993kb). And finally, the timely article ‘The deradicalisation of education: terror, youth and the assault on learning’, by Mayssoun Sukarieh and Stuart Tannock, to be published in Race & Class next year, has now been made available online.
